CES 2017: Whirlpool and Amazon have teamed up to create a new collection of smart appliances featuring voice control capability through Alexa enabled devices.
“As demand for a smart home ecosystem grows, consumers are looking for a wide variety of new ways to interact with their appliances, whether it’s on-product, digitally with an app, or through voice control,” comments Brett Dibkey, Vice President of Integrated Business Units at Whirlpool Corporation.
This means that you will be able to use your Amazon Alexa devices to ask Alexa to help with a host of tasks, from pausing and starting washers and dryers to turning the quiet mode on and off, instructing the dryer to run the Wrinkle Shield option or asking for the time remaining on a wash or dry cycle.
It’s good news for keen cooks who will be able to use Alexa to interact with smart ovens to set and adjust the cooking mode, temperature and time; ask whether the oven is on or how much time is remaining on the oven timer; ask for the current oven temperature; and set, start and stop the oven timer.
They will also be able to interact with their refrigerator to turn maximum ice and maximum cool settings off and on; ask for refrigerator filter status and current refrigerator temperatures; and set pantry drawer temperature modes.
The collaboration of Alexa expands on the success of Whirlpool’s relationship with Amazon, which includes the Amazon Dash Replenishment service, enabling connected devices to order laundry and kitchen products from Amazon when supplies are running low.
Whirlpool expects its voice-controlled appliances to be available in early 2017.
