Swiss appliance manufacturer Liebherr has collaborated with Microsoft to create a grocery management system called SmartBoxDevice. In the short term, SmartBoxDevice allows you to manage your appliance settings from your smartphone, tablet or other mobile device. In the long term, however, it is your ticket to the world of appliance networking.
Currently available on a selected number of Liebherr refrigerators, SmartBoxDevice enables you to view your appliance’s status online anytime and anywhere. Furthermore, you can quickly and easily make changes to settings in real time. If problems occur with your appliance, you will be notified by means of an alarm message directly to your smartphone or tablet.
Nice as all this is, do you really need it? Perhaps not, but this is just the beginning for SmartBoxDevice. The next generation is considerably more sophisticated owing to cameras with object recognition. These show images of what is stored inside your refrigerator. Also, they can recognise individual foods. This information is then fed automatically into an inventory list, which lets you see quickly and clearly what is in your refrigerator.
Most noteworthy is the MIA (Media Intelligence Assistant) voice module. This allows you to verbally add additional groceries to your shopping list. What’s more, using an app for iOS, Android or Windows, you can access your shopping list while you are in the supermarket.
“Technological progress is not an aim in itself. Not every technical possibility has an application in daily life,” says Steffen Nagel, CEO of Liebherr. “When it comes to digital offerings, we constantly ask ourselves, what do new living concepts and circumstances, such as mobility, urbanism and the desire for healthy nutrition mean to the consumer and how can technology specifically support them?”
Where is SmartDeviceBox available?
The SmartDeviceBox is available as an accessory via Liebherr retailers or directly. The SmartDeviceBox is already included with selected BluPerformance appliances. All SmartDevice-compatible appliances can be recognised by the ‘SmartDevice’ label on the panel behind the door.
